Winslow Community Mourns Passing of Junior High Principal

WINSLOW — The Winslow Unified School District and the surrounding community are mourning the loss of Ms. Debra A. Lopez, principal of Winslow Junior High School, who passed away peacefully on July 31, 2025. She was 56.

Lopez’s obituary was published by Greer’s Mortuary. Friends, colleagues, and students remember her as a dedicated educator whose life’s work was centered on leadership, compassion, and service to the Winslow community.

In an announcement posted by Winslow Junior High, staff wrote: “Ms. Lopez was more than a leader here, she was a mentor, a cheerleader and a steady presence in our halls. Greeting students with a smile, supporting teachers or showing up to events, she gave so much to our school and made it a better place for all of us. Her legacy at WJHS and in the community will be remembered for years to come. We’ll miss Ms. Lopez, but we’ll carry forward the kindness, strength, and spirit she brought to our community.”

District Superintendent Dr. Amber Martinez echoed those sentiments in a letter to the community on August 4, saying: “Ms. Lopez was a beloved leader, a passionate educator, and a cherished member of our school community. Her unwavering commitment to student success, her strong leadership, and her love for education left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of working with her. We are grateful for Ms. Lopez’s years of service, her inspiring leadership, and the many lives she touched. She will always be remembered with great admiration and love.”

Lopez was born and raised in Winslow and graduated from Winslow High School. She earned her bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Northern Arizona University and taught in the district for 14 years. 10 years in sixth grade and four years in fourth grade. She later earned a master’s in educational administration from Grand Canyon University. Before becoming principal, she served as an academic coach and student advisor, eventually stepping into the role of principal, a position she had held for eight years.

The district is offering emotional support services in the coming days and has encouraged students, staff, and families to keep Lopez’s family in their thoughts during this difficult time.

Services will be held on Saturday, August 9th, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Winslow, Arizona. The Rosary will begin at 9:30 a.m., followed by Mass at 10:00 a.m.
