According to authorities, a White Mountain Apache police Sergeant was involved in an altercation with a suspect in the community of Cedar Creek. The area is on the Fort Apache Reservation located in Gila County, about 32 miles from Show Low. The suspect reportedly hit the officer in the head with a rock before fleeing the scene.
“WMAT PD coordinated a search with AZ DPS, WMA Game Rangers, BIA. They canvassed the area for a male individual wearing dark clothing. No suspect has been captured at this time, if anyone has any information, we are asking you contact the WMA PD,” White Mountain Apache Tribal Police wrote on Facebook.
Authorities say the officer had to be airlifted to a Valley hospital and will recover.
Earlier this week, a different White Mountain Apache Police Officer was arrested in connection with a deadly hit-and-run crash that allegedly happened while he was on duty and resigned after being arrested.
Authorities are asking the Cedar Creek community to be aware and vigilant as the search continues and will notice an increased police presence in the area. Anyone with information is asked to call White Mountain Apache Tribal Police at (928) 338-4942.
“Please keep the Officer in prayers for a quick recovery, as well as the Police Officers, Rangers, and first responders of our departments,” officials said in a release.
