SPRINGERVILLE — The towns of Springerville and Eagar announced Wednesday that the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Apache County Attorney’s Office are investigating the Round Valley Police Department’s policies, procedures, and officers.
According to the press release, town officials contacted DPS to request the independent review. The investigation is ongoing.
As part of interim measures, the towns have asked DPS to assign an interim chief of police from DPS during the investigation. DPS confirmed the interim chief of police by email to Mountain Daily Star.
Chief Dayson Merrill has led the Round Valley Police Department since November of 2023 and oversees a small police force serving the Town of Eagar & Springerville.
In addition to the DPS review, the Apache County Attorney’s Office is examining potential Brady List implications involving multiple Round Valley officers.
The Brady List tracks law enforcement officers with sustained findings of misconduct that could affect their credibility in court. County attorney offices receive and maintain these records, and agencies such as the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board (AZPOST) are notified when allegations arise. Prosecutors are legally obligated to disclose Brady material to defense attorneys in criminal cases, which can directly impact prosecutions involving those officers.
“The Towns of Springerville and Eagar take these concerns seriously and will be working closely with these agencies to ensure the safety of our communities during this time,” the statement read.
The press release was signed by Springerville Mayor Shelly Reidhead and Eagar Mayor Guy Phelps.
