HOLBROOK, Ariz. — A 14-year-old girl was seriously injured Monday afternoon after running into traffic and was struck by a vehicle, according to the Holbrook Police Department.
Officers responded to the reported vehicle-versus-pedestrian collision at approximately 12:02 p.m. on Jan. 5. Police said the driver, identified as 39-year-old Ledra Young of Joseph City, was traveling westbound when two juveniles ran into the roadway in front of her vehicle.
According to investigators, Young honked her horn to warn the girls. One juvenile reportedly heard the warning and retreated toward the sidewalk, but the victim continued running across the street. Police said the victim was wearing AirPods at the time of the incident.
The driver attempted to avoid the collision by braking and swerving into oncoming traffic but was unable to stop before striking the juvenile. The 14-year-old female sustained multiple injuries and was airlifted to Flagstaff for medical treatment.
Holbrook police said the investigation determined the victim and her companion were illegally crossing the roadway at the time of the collision. The incident remains under investigation.
