WINSLOW — A 59-year-old man died after being taken into custody by Winslow police on Monday evening following a shoplifting call at Walmart.

According to the Winslow Police Department, officers were dispatched to the Walmart at 700 Mike’s Pike around 6:18 p.m. on August 18 after receiving a report of shoplifting. At 6:31 p.m., officers located the suspect near Maverick at 2110 North Park Drive. He has been identified as Dean Fowler.

Fowler was arrested and transported to the Winslow Police Department for booking. While in a holding cell, an officer discovered him unresponsive. Police say officers immediately attempted life-saving measures, including CPR, until medical personnel arrived. Despite those efforts, Fowler was pronounced dead.

According to public records, Fowler has multiple arrest records for drugs, burglary, and more.

Because the incident involved Winslow police personnel, investigators from the regional homicide task force have taken over the case. The department said the investigation remains active.
