Apache County armed standoff suspect identified

APACHE COUNTY- The suspect involved in the Apache County armed standoff near HWY 60 and CR 3095 has been identified, and charges have been filed.

Local law enforcement agencies and the AZDPS SWAT Team worked together to contain a suspect that shot at law enforcement and was barricaded in a home off HWY 60 near CR 3095. The suspect was shot and transported to a Phoenix Hospital. No officer related injuries were reported.

On Sunday, June 9, 2024, at around 8:50 pm, the Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) Special Operations District SWAT Team was requested by the White Mountain Regional SWAT Team and the Apache County Sheriff’s Office, wrote the AZDPS spokesperson.

Apache County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Jesse Robinson stated the suspect, James Dean Bailey Jr, allegedly fired over 300 rounds. He was injured in the gunfight and was booked into jail after he was released from the hospital. Several agencies came to assist, including Show Low PD and DPS.

“The incident started over a domestic dispute and when deputies arrived the suspect started shooting,” said Robinson.

“Bailey was former military, so he was prepared,” Robinson continued.

Total Bail: $200000

Apache County Superior Court set Bailey’s preliminary hearing date for June 24 at 1:30 p.m.; however, according to court records, the State of Arizona moved to continue the hearing. Its based on the fact that the Prosecutors for the State will be unavailable.
