Is there marriage in Heaven? | Pastor Josh Lagesse

Dive into weekly messages about God and Faith from local Clergy.

Valley View Baptist Church-Pastor Josh Lagesse.

The chronicles of the Lagesse family started eight years ago when my wife, Carmen, and I embarked on a lifelong journey. We were married before God, our family, and friends in May 2015. We are approaching our ninth year of marriage, and I am excited to celebrate the special day with my wife, my best friend, and a fantastic mother to my children.

I am astonished when I meet couples who have been married for what I would consider a lifetime. I am not referring to those who have been married for ten, twenty, or even thirty years. I am talking about people who have been married for fifty years or more. What a remarkable achievement and I pray and hope to be married for that long.

Can you imagine the love and commitment it takes to be married for that long? To be married for half of a century or more? Fifty years may seem like a lot to some people, but it isn’t that long in light of eternity. When considering eternity, many of us ask what will happen to our marriage when we go to Heaven. Will I still be married? Will we know each other? Will we be friends?

My wife loves to tease me about this subject. She sometimes jokes around with me about us being just friends in Heaven. Needless to say, my wife has a really cheeky sense of humor. Some people believe that we continue being married in Heaven. Some people believe that we get more spouses when we get to Heaven. And even some people believe that there is no Heaven and therefore, if we cease to exist, so does our marriage.

This week at Valley View Southern Baptist Church, we will read and learn about Matthew 22:23-33. During the week of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection, some religious leaders were trying to discredit Him. In Matthew 22:23-33 we read about one group of religious leaders called the Sadducees. They were the wealthy and governing class of the religious leaders. They only accepted Genesis through Deuteronomy as Scripture. Because of this, they did not believe in life after death, they didn’t believe in the resurrection of the dead, and they didn’t believe in angels.

They asked Jesus a question about marriage in the resurrection. There are many components to His answer, which we will dive into this Sunday. However, when addressing marriage in resurrection, He said that we are not married and are like the angels. Wait, we are not married after this life? And we are like angels? What does that mean?

To find out the answer, you are welcome to join us this Sunday as we read and learn about Matthew 22:23-33. Feel free to read ahead because the answer may surprise you. We have Sunday School at 9:45 am and Sunday Morning Service at 11 am. We also have a Sunday and Wednesday Evening Service at 6 pm.

We look forward to worshiping God with you through prayer, singing, preaching, and teaching His Word. If you can’t join us in person, you can join us and worship God online. We hope to see you Sunday!

May God bless you and keep you!
