OVERGAARD, Ariz. — On the night of March 2, at approximately 7:55 p.m., the Heber-Overgaard Fire District units responded to a structure fire on the 2000 block of Penrod Road in Overgaard, Arizona. The quick response saved lives and the structure.
The initial 911 reports indicated that there were four victims in a residential home with fire present. Initial responses included Engine 71, Rescue 71, Tender 71, and Fire 71. The incident was upgraded to a 1st alarm while units were responding due to the possible victims and the size of the home.
The first units to arrive were on scene within five minutes. All four victims were evacuated from the structure and the hazard zone. One patient was treated for mild smoke inhalation and released on scene; the other three victims were evaluated and did not have any injuries.
Chief Payne with the Heber Overgaard Fire District stated, “Upon inspection, the fire started in the fireplace chimney, extending to both floors and the attic. The fire was quickly knocked down, and all extensions of the fire were extinguished with minimal damage to the structure. Salvage and overhaul of the structure were completed at approximately 11:00 p.m.”
The four occupants of the residence were displaced from their home and placed with neighbors and family for the foreseeable future. The Heber-Overgaard Fire District fire crews visited the home the following morning to evaluate the conditions, and no smoke or heat was detected.
“Thanks to the quick 911 call, Navajo County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, our automatic aid partners, and the brave, dedicated firefighters of the Heber-Overgaard Fire District crews, there were no civilian or public safety injuries, and the home was saved,” the district said.
“We wish to also extend a sincere thank you to our wonderful community for all the support for the families affected,” the district said.
Mountain Daily Star staff listened to the radio traffic of this call and would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to the Heber-Overgaard Fire District firefighters for their diligent, professional work protecting the community.
